La On Village Nightlife

Where to Go at Night in La On Village

Don’t expect hedonistic, out-of-control head-banging nightlife in Khao Lak but do look out for lots of friendly people, laid-back pubs and bars with a touch of live music here and there.

La On is actually small enough to walk the length of it and take in the pubs and bars as they come.

Discovery Café

Is Discovery a restaurant or a bar? That’s for you to discover. Roadside and busy, it’s definitely a restaurant earlier on in the evening but morphs later on into quite a night spot – well at least by rather laid-back, less-than-nuclear Khao Lak standards.

Opening Hours: 08:00 – 24:00
Location: Central La On

Happy Snapper

The most happening place in the Khao Lak and Phang Nga area, Happy Snapper is a class act. It used to be a full-on restaurant but nowadays concentrates on its nighttime appeal by means of great décor, events, and nightly live music, although you can still order bar snacks. The house band invites musicians in the audience to jam but be warned – if you’re not up to scratch you’ll be gently invited to step down… The live music starts at 10:30 with the house band and things get moving around midnight when the dancing begins. People come back year after year to get down and boogie at Happy Snapper, and for good reason.

Opening Hours: 08:30 – 01:00 Sundays 10:00 – 22:30
Location: Northern La On

Monkey Bar

Down a side alley by Ska Bar you’ll find Monkey Bar – a relative newcomer to Khao Lak’s nightlife scene. Knocking out reggae riffs and the usual musical fare, Monkey Bar is not exactly leading the way in innovativeness but, with live music later on, quite a few people choose to head there after eating.

Opening Hours: 17:00 – Late
Location: Central La On

O’Connor’s Irish Pub

Here’s a conundrum: a German-run Irish Pub in Thailand that serves Korean food. Still, Ralf, the owner and ex-tsunami volunteer, has a stock answer to such improbabilities – “Why not?” Strictly speaking, the Korean food is only served when there’s a barbecue going on and the pub has an admirable range of single malt whiskies and international draught beers as well as Thai and international dishes. O’Connor’s also has occasional live music, a friendly atmosphere, genuine décor and runs “chaotic but fun” Thai cooking classes.

Opening Hours: 10:00 – 24:00
Location: Northern La On opposite Chusak Clinic
Remarks: Cooking classes available

Ska Bar

If it’s true that the best things in life come in small packages then Ska Bar is the living proof. Underneath Jamaican colours and thatched roof, next to the Ruen Thai Massage on the main road you’ll find the minimalist Ska Bar with its cocktails, cool beer and cooler sounds and seating for about 20 people. Reminiscent of Bangkok’s Cheap Charlie’s – a pedestrian-street watering hole with three bar stools (everyone else stands) – Ska Bar is open to the elements, passing traffic and passersby and as such is a one-off.

Opening Hours: 18:00 – 24:00
Location: Highway 4, by 7-Eleven

Tarzan Bar

One of the longest-lasting bars in Khao Lak, Tarzan Bar has good music until late and if it has outlived the rest of the pack it’s got to be for a good reason. Made from terracotta tiles and wood, the two-storey building quietly works its momentum up over the evening until things get rocking later on. Flat-screen TV’s show sporting events upstairs.

Opening Hours: 12:00 – Late
Location: Central La On
